Tirzah Garwood

Just visited the Dulwich Picture Gallery for the *Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious* exhibition — and wow, what a gem! It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but absolutely worth every minute. The gallery itself is a beauty, housing an impressive collection of European art with highlights from Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Canaletto, and some striking Tudor portraits.

But the real revelation was Tirzah Garwood. This is her first major exhibition, and it’s long overdue. Known as a painter, printmaker, and designer — and yes, once married to Eric Ravilious — Tirzah was so much more than a footnote in someone else’s story. Her work bursts with life, wit, and charm.

Her use of colour is exquisite, and there’s something magical about her depictions of toys and children’s dolls in garden settings — like little stage sets or dreamlike vignettes. The box art pieces, showing house fronts and village scenes, are full of quiet detail and nostalgia. The final room is especially moving, showcasing work from the last year of her life when she was bedridden with cancer. One unfinished painting in particular really lingers in the mind.

This is a stunning, deeply affecting exhibition by a hugely underrated artist. It runs until 26 May — don’t miss it!
